SCU History Our story 1994 - 2014 was an exciting time for Southern Cross University as it evolved from what was a Teachers College, in the 1970s, into a fully-fledged University with its own identity in 1994. As part of our 20-year celebrations, we developed a series of stories, historical information and personal recollections. These include a condensed Brief History of SCU from Teachers College to University. We've also included some expanded descriptions of distinct five-year periods describing the University's history over two decades: 1994 – 1998, 1999 – 2003, 2004 – 2008 and 2009 – 2013. We've sourced stories from graduates, staff and local organisations, and there is a list of Chancellors and Vice Chancellors who have served the University and been instrumental in shaping the direction of the University. Also included is a history of research at SCU and a history of international students at SCU.

Helping students understand this is something that we, at SP Jain, do uniquely through our multi-campus learning model. All of SP Jain’s full-time students live and study in not one but in a minimum of three different cities. We have campuses in Dubai, Mumbai, Singapore, and Sydney. So, in addition to learning the various tools of business (like most students), SP Jain students understand the global nature of business in the most compelling way – through actual exposure to diverse cultures, political beliefs, traditions, and technological innovations. Accreditation Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency, Australia SP Jain is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA), Australia. At the end of the program, students are conferred with an Australian degree. This greatly enhances the international acceptance of the degree, thereby giving impetus to higher education and careers, globally. Our Vision La Trobe will be a University known for its excellence and innovation in relation to the big issues of our time, and for its enthusiasm to make a difference. La Trobe will be one of the top three Universities in Victoria, one of the top dozen nationally and one of the top 300 internationally. Our Values In 2012, as part of the development of the University's five-year strategic plan 'Future Ready' we articulated a set of values. We developed these values through… [+] a consultative process involving many La Trobe staff. The five values guide everything we do. At La Trobe University we: Take a world view Pursue ideas and excellence with energy Treat people with respect and work together Are open, friendly and honest Hold ourselves accountable for making great things happen Values are expressed through behaviours and during the first part of 2013, we will explore how La Trobe staff and students can translate our values into behaviours that generate benefits for the communities we interact with and serve. Our past La Trobe was the third university created for Victoria and was established to be complementary to, but different from, the other two. Its founders aspired to create a university that would: Provide an accessible alternative to the two pre-existing universities Bring university education to the northern suburbs of Melbourne Excel in a number of selected disciplines Shaped by the era of our birth, La Trobe developed a distinctive ethos which joined ‘social engagement’ to the pursuit of academic excellence. Reflecting our desire to engage with the outside world, our public intellectuals became and remain among the most engaged in the nation, and our alumni are some of the most influential their generations have produced. In the 1980s and ‘90s, we redefined the University through new relationships, especially in country Victoria. We are now a multi-campus university and the largest provider of higher education to Victoria’s regions. Moreover, we have the largest regional enrolment of the mainland Australian universities in the Academic Ranking of World Universities ‘Top 500’. La Trobe University now has some of the world’s best researchers in the sciences and humanities contributing to the achievement of this ranking. La Trobe is a globally recognised university, transforming the lives of its students, many being the first in their family to attend university, and playing an important role in its local communities. These are achievements of which we can be justly proud. Our future Times have changed, and the manner in which we must play our part in the world, as well as the complexity and cost of academic research, have changed with them. For instance, Melbourne’s North is being transformed by population expansion and rising demand for higher education. All the regions we serve face new challenges as a result of structural changes in national and global economies along with environmental and social challenges. Students have greater choice than ever before and expect a high-quality educational experience, together with the engaging, relevant and flexible curriculum. The issues facing our society, and to which our courses and research must respond, include climate change, the ageing of our population, the rise of Asia’s relevance and influence, the revolution in the medical sciences, and the resilience of societies in the face of rapid change. Other challenges will arise during the lifespan of this Plan, and La Trobe will be agile in responding to them. Our history equips us with the appropriate formula for success in such an environment. Our geography, ethos and academic strengths can be the starting points for an even livelier and stronger La Trobe that retains its relevance and remains true to its ideals. International activities La Trobe is dedicated to serving the global community through internationalisation, innovative teaching and learning methods, and research. This includes encouraging our students and staff to gain international experience, development of an internationalised curriculum and research programs, and the diversification of our student community. The University's strong international focus is manifested and continually enhanced in several key areas of the University: Teaching an internationally relevant curriculum, which prepares students to be global citizens, entrepreneurs, employers and employees a range of courses and pathways that meet the requirements of the diverse markets in which we operate, and which are delivered onshore in Victoria and Sydney, or offshore with high-quality transnational teaching partners high-quality academic relationships strong and productive partnerships with pathway providers onshore and offshore Research strong international research partnerships and internationally focused research Community engagement opportunities and support for international students to engage successfully in their University life and in their communities exceptionally strong engagement with employers, industry and with alumni Student mobility opportunities for our students to participate in exchange academic programs overseas and active partnerships with over 150 institutions in more than 40 countries.

The language, obviously! There’s nothing as effective as learning a language in the country it comes from – especially if more than a billion people live in that country! You'd go to France to learn French, Italy to learn Italian, Japan to learn Japanese… so learning Chinese in China is a natural choice. By studying in China you can use what you learn from your classes and your one-on-one tutoring right away; to order food at a restaurant, to haggle at a local market, to converse with cab drivers, and even to make new friends. After all, when more than one-fifth of the world’s population speaks some form of Chinese, you’re likely to meet one of them sooner or later! 2. The history. A country as populous as China didn’t get so large overnight – it took a long, long time. The earliest examples of written Chinese history date back to 1600 BC, though the stories refer to events occurring up to 4200 years ago! Since then, China has undergone episodes of expansion and contraction, of war and peace, of poverty and prosperity, of invasion and rebellion, of unification and civil strife, of empire and warring states. Even the imperial dynasties of foreign invaders like the Mongols and Manchus respected the long history of their conquered land – both assimilated themselves into Chinese culture, rather than imposing their own on the people. As you study Mandarin in China you'll also immerse yourself in this rich and fascinating history, which never fails to captivate visitors. 3. The food. Before you come study in China you'll probably have sampled plenty of Chinese food in your home country, but there is so much more to the Chinese cuisine than sweet and sour pork balls and General Tso’s chicken! In fact, there is such a wide range of tastes and flavours in China that it’s pretty difficult to define a singular style of “Chinese” food. From the sweet and tangy Cantonese food in Guangdong to the numbing spiciness of Sichuan cuisine, and from the many varieties of dumplings in stacked bamboo steamers to the elegance of the classic Beijing roast duck, you are bound to discover something to delight the tastebuds! 4. The culture. As you can imagine, a civilization of over 4000 years has developed a culture too rich to describe in a few words… but let’s give it a try: Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism. Mandarin and Cantonese. Kung fu and tai chi. Shaolin monks and Buddhist temples. Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Gong Li and Zhang Ziyi. Chen Kaige and Zhang Yimou. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Farewell My Concubine. The Art of War, by Sun Tzu. Feng shui. Yin and yang. The lunar calendar. Chinese New Year and Spring Festival. The Dragon Boat Festival. Mid-Autumn Festival and mooncakes. The Chinese zodiac. The dragon and the phoenix. Porcelain and calligraphy. Ming vases, jade ornaments and silk robes. Terracotta warriors and Buddhist statues. Chinese opera. Zithers, fiddles, drums and gongs… just to name a few. 5. The people. If you’ve met Chinese people before, the chances are that you’ve met someone from the Han Chinese ethnic group. With over 1.2 billion people in China, Taiwan and Hong Kong, plus a diaspora of over 40 million more around the world, the Han Chinese are the world’s largest ethnic group. But China’s population also includes 55 other distinct ethnic minorities, from the Manchus of the Qing dynasty to the Hui people of the Silk Road, from the Uyghurs of Central Asia to the Mongol descendants of Genghis Khan, each of which has their own history and culture. Learn Chinese in China and you'll have the opportunity meet many of them for yourself. 6. The land. As the world’s third-largest country by size, there’s no shortage of places to go and things to see in while you're living and studying in China. From the desert dunes and grasslands in the north to the sub-tropical climate of the south, the country will mesmerize you. Check out the seemingly never-ending mountains and vistas of Yunnan province, experience the surreal limestone formations of Guilin and Yangshuo or imagine yourself as a warrior in Genghis Khan’s army when horse-riding on the Inner Mongolian steppes. Follow the lifeblood of river trade down the Chang Jiang (Yangtze River) as it divides China into north and south for more than 6000 kilometres. All this is possible, and we haven’t even mentioned the pandas yet! 7. The cities. Most people can only name Beijing or Shanghai when it comes to Chinese cities, but there are, in fact, more than 160 cities in China with a population greater than 1 million. With regional differences in climate, physical environment, cuisine, and even spoken dialect, it’s no wonder that even Chinese people have trouble getting a handle on things. As you learn Chinese you can choose to see Beijing in all its imperial splendour or live close to the postcard scenery of Lijiang, get energized in Shanghai’s hustle and bustle or chill out on the beach in Qingdao. Alternatively, if actual chills are more your style, visit Harbin in January for the ice sculpture festival where you'll see entire buildings carved out of ice! By studying in China you'll have every chance get beyond the major cities and experience everything the country has to offer. 8. The economy. Does anything more really need to be said about China’s economy? It is the second largest in the world, after the USA, having grown at a rate of about 10% per year for the past 30 years. Yet with an annual per capita GDP of less than $4000 US dollars, there’s still a lot of room to improve. And what another country can boast being a player in as many areas as China? Besides the traditional industries of agriculture and manufacturing, the country has also become a world leader in areas like mining, solar panels, high-speed trains, and telecommunications. China has even become the world’s largest car market, overtaking the USA for the first time in 2009. 9. The schools. Whether you’re looking for a short-term Chinese language course or applying for a degree program, there is an institution in China that suits your needs. Tailor your language classes to your own schedule at the Beijing Mandarin Academy. Spend your summer learning Mandarin by the beach at Ocean University in Qingdao. Take a class at the Beijing Language and Culture University, the best school in the country for Chinese teachers. Challenge yourself at an institution like Peking University or Tsinghua University, both ranked in the top 60 in the world by the QS World University Rankings and The Times Higher Education World University Rankings. Whatever you’re looking for, you can find it here. 10. The future. In our interconnected and globalized world, China is and will continue to be a part of our lives whether we like it or not, so why not get involved? The opportunities here are endless, the possibilities unlimited. Coming to China is not only the best way to learn Chinese, it's also a wonderful opportunity to meet new friends and make new contacts. Even if you don’t plan to stay here long term, the experience of studying in China will be worth putting on your resume or CV, at the very least. While the rest of the world languishes in economic and social doldrums the Middle Kingdom is racing forward, building the future: learn Chinese in China and build your future to Contact Us Want to know more about one of our study abroad programs in China? Australian companies are beginning to discover that creative skills can bring fresh thinking to any organisation. Too many institutions are offering creative courses that ignore skills like pitching, negotiation and market-based price sensitivity, which is key to successfully running your own business. Since 2014, Acknowledge Creativity has evolved to serve the increase in requests for design-thinking and innovation tools from business students. It was at this time we were… [+] also noticing many creatives (artists, designers and writers) looking for commercial skills such as leadership, pitching, and pricing. More than just finding a niche, we found kindred spirits who had struggled with where and how to learn these ‘other side’ skills. Our first workshops involved both a creative and business-minded audience, and we marvelled at how much they had to teach each other. Our goal became about building the perfect place to develop creative, entrepreneurial and technical mindsets; a place where participants could learn skills they could take into their workplaces and make positive changes. We believe... If you’re not making memories, you’re wasting time. If you’re not standing up for what you believe in, you’re pretending. If you’re not asking questions, you are not learning. Values Our values are simple but powerful. If you’re not making memories, you’re wasting time. If you’re not standing up for what you believe in, you’re pretending. If you’re not asking how you can help, you don’t care. Today’s dream can turn into tomorrow’s start-up, with an eye on the stock exchange if that’s your goal. The Diploma of Creative Enterprise trains participants to adapt, invent, innovate and thrive in today’s learning economy. Our students are artistic, resourceful, and inspired to tackle new situations, problems and challenges with skills to specialise in a particular creative discipline or apply their learning to a broader business environment. Unlock the perfect fusion of imagination, creation and business acumen, and discover the world of creative opportunities that await at Acknowledge Creativity.

"What we are doing here is based on my thirty years experience, and that says to me to have a small group of people and prepare them for employment...There needs to be a central mentorship. There needs to be someone to know their students and see their weaknesses and support, and the more students you have the more difficult it becomes.
