Gdansk University of Technology (Politechnika Gdańska), Faculty of Management and Economics

Introduction

The Faculty of Management and Economics of the Technical University of Gdańsk was formed in 1993 through a merger of the Department of Organization and Designing of Production Systems of the Faculty of Machine Technology and Production Organization with the Inter-Faculty Institute of Economic and Human Science. Skills and experience of academic staff proficient in modern engineering, economics, human sciences and managerial matters were combined by the same.

Over the 17 years of its existence the Faculty has developed dynamically. The number of students has grown from a few hundreds to almost three thousand.

Academic staff

The Faculty can boast quite a good academic staff. Since 1995 we have been authorized to confer doctor’s degree in Economics, and since 2009 in Management. We are thus Poland’s only technical academic institute that has double authorization to confer doctor’s degree in Economic Sciences. Consequently, we are the only institute of the kind to run doctoral studies in that field (since 2010). Over the last three years members of our staff were granted two awards of the Minister of Science and Higher Education and one award of the Prime Minister for their research achievements. We are proud not merely of a big number of publications, but of many worthy scientific monographs, printed by the country’s best publishing houses.

Achievements

We occupy top ranking positions in Poland and we are listed in the classification of 1,000 world’s best school of business, having been awarded three (against the five potentially available) palms by Eduniversal in 2008 and 2009.

We are one of Poland’s few higher training institutes enjoying membership of European Foundation for Management Development where best schools of business and management faculties are associated.

And we are among a dozen or so of higher training institutes awarded the status of a “Plagiarism-Fighting Faculty”, the procedures employed by us in that respect having been found to be exemplary ones.

On the whole, we are highly appraised by Poland’s educational market: we are a recognizable brand, our diplomas are valued in the labour market, and we have lots of candidates to our full-time and postgraduate studies.

The programme that has been produced has, in my view, all the hall-marks of a world-class MBA. I particularly welcome the exciting balance of 'breadth' it offers in relation to the core managerial competencies and management learning and 'depth' of specialism in a choice of three significant activity fields - healthcare, sports management and project management. From my experience of many MBAs, this is one that has been thoughtfully designed to meet the development needs of experienced practitioners - building on their existing knowledge, challenging their assumptions with fresh perspectives and new ways of thinking about their management practice, and widening their horizons through working with colleagues from a range of different organizations. And importantly, participants who complete this excellent programme will retain the distinction not only of having studied at one of Poland's top-rated management schools but also having done so with some of the world's top management teachers.

What makes the Gdansk University of Technology MBA programme special is not only the way it brings together sectoral specialisation and the core business competencies but also the way it challenges sectoral orthodoxy and focuses on management and not just on business analysis. For example, the management accounting course not only teaches the basic analytical skills but continually challenges participants to evolve and justify management decisions in their specialisation and then goes the extra step of teaching the most effective way to communicate the decisions and analysis in business reports and presentations. It is this continued placing of the analytical in the perspective of management practice that makes for successful management education, especially when the participants are themselves successful practitioners in their own sectors.
