About Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a small Asian island located in the Indian Ocean, just south of India. This country was first populated by Sinhalese who most likely came from the northern part of India in the 6th century BC. This island was controlled by a number of European nations throughout its history including Portugal, Holland, and finally England. It became an independent nation in 1948. In recent years Sri Lanka has become more politically stable, and this formerly war torn nation has benefitted from economic development projects headed by its elected officials. These years have been marked by relative economic growth and prosperity.
