About Luxembourg

A landlocked nation in Western Europe, Luxembourg shares a border with France, Germany and Belgium. Its languages reflect this; French, German and Luxembourgish are all recognized as official languages. This constitutional monarchy is the world’s only remaining grand duchy and boasts the world’s largest GDP per capita. It is a founding member of NATO, the European Union and the UN. The nation has a longstanding industrial sector, but in recent years has become a major financial hub. It is the second largest investment fund center in the world and the most important private banking center in Europe. Many Internet start-ups base their regional headquarters in Luxembourg and the government hopes to continue to attract businesses of all types.

Students who wish to study business in Luxembourg will study at the University of Luxembourg, the only university in the small country. The university is multilingual and courses are generally held in two of three languages: English, French or German.

The academic year begins in mid-September. Classes continue until the Christmas holidays, after which students are given one week to prepare for exams, which take place during the final weeks of January. Following a one-week break the second semester begins in mid-February. Classes are suspended during the Easter break, then continue through the end of May. Again students are given a week to prepare for exams, which take place in June. July and August comprise the summer holidays.

Luxembourg enjoys one of the highest standards of living in Europe, which makes it one of the most expensive places to live, as well. Tuition varies depending on the program but also depending on how many semesters the student has completed. Scholarships and grants are available for resident and international students. Prospective scholars can find more information about tuition and living expenses on the university website.

Depending on the program, a bachelor’s degree may require three to four years of study. Bachelor’s students are required to spend at least one semester abroad, and exchange opportunities are offered at all levels. A master’s degree can take one to two years of full-time study to complete, and can be followed by a doctoral degree.

Students who choose to study business in Luxembourg will find a unique educational opportunity. The multilingual education with its emphasis on exposing students to business on an international scale will assist participants in developing a multifaceted pallet of marketable skills. Students will interact with peers and faculty from all over the world, gaining a truly global perspective. In addition, Luxembourg’s convenient location in the center of Europe and its high standard of living can make it a truly enjoyable place to live and study.
