About Jordan
The Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan is located on the east bank of the Jordan River. An Arab kingdom in the Middle East, it is bordered by Israel, Palestine, Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The nation is a constitutional monarchy where the king wields considerable executive and legislative powers. The Parliament consists of a House of Representatives whose members are democratically elected and a Senate whose members are chosen by the King. It is classified as an “upper-middle income” nation, with trade and finance being its strongest sectors. While the official language is Arabic, English is also widely spoken and is taught in schools at all levels.
There are a number of institutions where one can study business in Jordan. In addition to the 10 public and 16 private universities, there are several international universities, including Columbia University, German-Jordanian University, DePaul University and the American University of Madaba. All offer internationally accredited degree programs.
Most of Jordan’s institutions operate on a nine-month school year model, split into two semesters or terms. In addition to a short break between terms and a longer summer break, most schools take days off throughout the school year for Christian, Islamic and national holidays.
The cost of a degree at one of Jordan’s universities can vary widely from one institution to the next. Tuition may be more expensive for international students, although scholarships and grants may be available. Prospective students should also factor in the cost of living, which may not be included in the cost of tuition.
The length of time required to earn a degree is similar to that of universities in Europe and the United States. A full-time student can earn a bachelor’s degree in around four years. A master’s degree requires an additional one to two years of study, and includes coursework as well as a master’s thesis or a comprehensive exam. The Magister and DEA degrees offered by some schools are considered equivalent to a master’s degree. A doctorate degree can be attained with an additional three to five years of study and the completion of a dissertation.
Jordan’s educational system is considered one of the best in the Arab world. Its universities attract a large number of international students and the Ministry of Education places a strong emphasis on forging ties with academic institutions around the world. Students who study business in Jordan will find a diverse student body and the unique opportunity to live and study in a part of the Middle East that is safe, friendly and hospitable to Westerners.
