About Jersey

The island nation of Jersey, known officially as the Bailiwick of Jersey, is the largest of the Channel Islands and resides between England and France. The island measures 118.2 square kilometers and has a population of just under 100,000. Although it maintains ties with the United Kingdom, it is an autonomous nation with its own legal, judicial and financial systems. It is a parliamentary democracy ruled by a constitutional monarchy. The country is economically prosperous. Its primary industries are financial services and tourism. English has overtaken the indigenous Jèrriais as the primary language of the island, although French is also widely spoken. The climate is mild and the beaches extensive and beautiful.

Students who wish to study business in Jersey will find an academic system similar to that of the United Kingdom. Although small, the nation boasts a handful of excellent institutes of higher learning, including colleges and business schools. These work collaboratively with larger universities in England to provide students with an excellent business education that emphasizes international commerce and finance.

Many courses in Jersey are offered in a traditional two-semester model, beginning in September and terminating in May. There are also options to attend school year-round in order to complete the program more quickly. School breaks vary depending on the institution, but most include a winter holiday of two to three weeks and a summer holiday of around three months.

Tuition costs are generally less than £10,000 per year, although this does not include cost of living expenses. Studying in Jersey can be much less expensive than the cost of a similar degree in England or other parts of Europe.

Colleges in Jersey offer a number of educational paths. There are traditional four-year, full-time options, as well as part-time and night-class options that may take longer but enable students to continue working while earning their degree. The Jersey International Business School offers a fast-track option that enables students to earn a bachelor’s degree in only two years. This program breaks each year into four back-to-back units—students study rigorously and continuously in order to complete the coursework in the shorter time frame.

Students who choose to study business in Jersey can enjoy the unique culture of the island and also benefit from its close proximity to the rest of Europe. The smaller size of its institutions provides the opportunity to forge strong relationships with classmates and professors. Jersey is considered one of the leading offshore financial centers. The success of its financial leaders and the island’s ties with prestigious financial institutions and business schools make it an excellent choice for business education.
