About Jamaica

An island country and member of the Greater Antilles and West Indies, Jamaica is located in the Caribbean Sea governed by a parliamentary constitutional monarchy headed by Queen Elizabeth II. Universities registered with the University Council of Jamaica provide undergraduate and graduate business degree programs. In Jamaica, a "college" is similar to U.S. and European community colleges that only offer associate degrees and vocational certifications. Jamaican and international students seeking admittance into a university must either pass five General Certificate of Education subjects or obtain an associate's degree that can be transferred to a university.

Students whose native language is not English must also prove proficiency in English before being admitted to a four year business degree program.

How Long Does It Take to Earn a Degree in Jamaica?

Undergraduate business degrees take a minimum of three years and a maximum of four years to complete. Postgraduate programs leading to master or doctorate degrees take another two to four years to complete, depending on whether the student attends full-time or part-time.

Average tuition costs for a four-year business degree at an accredited Jamaican university averages $1,200,000 in Jamaican Dollars ($10,000 USD or 9100 EUR). Technology and registration fees apply as well, which vary among the five universities operating in Jamaica. Tuition for graduate business degrees are typically double that of a bachelor's degree.

After earning a business degree in Jamaica, students may consider seeking employment elsewhere unless they plan to work in the tourism industry, which is Jamaica's main source of income.
