About Barbados

Located in the eastern Caribbean, Barbados is an island nation with a population of about 274,200. It is situated near the Windward Islands, Trinidad and Tobago, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. This country is a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, delicious cuisine and cultural history. The people gained their independence from the United Kingdom in 1966, and as a result of being under British rule for many years, have been largely influenced by British culture. Because of this, cricket has become very popular in Barbados, as well as other sports such as horse racing, basketball, polo and tennis. Barbados is also one of the most densely populated countries in the world, with the official language being English.

Higher Education

There are a few schools that offer degree level education for those looking to study business in Barbados including the Barbados Community College, the University of West Indies at Cave Hill, and the Samuel Jackman Prescod Polytechnic. Those who have completed their secondary education and wish to earn a degree are required to take the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) in order to be considered for acceptance into a university.

Academic Year

Because it is modeled after the British education system, the academic year in Barbados consists of three terms. Typically, the first term will begin the first week of September through mid-December, with the second term beginning the first week of January lasting through March and the third term starting mid-April through the end of June. Students will also have a one-week break in the middle of October.

Tuition can also vary widely depending upon the type of school and program of study. Contact the school directly for more information.

Why You Should Earn a Degree in Barbados

Barbados is an excellent place for those seeking to receive a higher education, as it offers beautiful scenery, unique experiences and a variety of degrees and programs to choose from. In addition, Barbados has been classified as a high-income economy with a moderately high standard of living. Because the government is business-friendly and is constantly making efforts to reduce unemployment, students need not be as concerned about finding a job, whether it be during their studies or after they have graduated. Students can also use their degrees to find positions in other areas of the world once they have completed their studies.
