Business Analytics Concentration
Businesses know that their data is an asset. Companies such as Amazon, Google, Facebook, and Twitter have led the way in using organizational data to drive innovation and business results. New tools have been developed to help organizations discover value in their data. A new discipline – which goes by several names including Business Analytics, Data Science, Big Data or Data Analytics – has emerged as one of the fastest growing fields.
The Sprott MBA concentration in Business Analytics empowers students to use data to enhance decision making. At Sprott, we have the knowledge, skills and tools to help discover the potential in organizational data. Researchers at Sprott work on business analytics applications in finance, marketing, human resources, production and operations management.
The MBA concentration in Business Analytics is part of Carleton University’s Collaborative Master’s in Data Science. Students following this concentration will take specialized courses on data analysis using statistical methods, have access to new tools, and will have the opportunity to engage with students in other disciplines to enhance their understanding of analytics.
Financial Management Concentration
The Sprott MBA Financial Management concentration provides the necessary tools and concepts for those who want to excel in corporate financial management. The success of an enterprise depends on the effective management of capital invested by shareholders and a proper corporate governance framework. Recent events in capital and stock markets have reinforced the importance of prudent financial and investment management for financial professionals.
The financial management function cuts across strategic, tactical and operational decisions, as well as functional areas that include accounting, operations, marketing and logistics. Financial managers require an appreciation for managing the day-to-day operations of the firm (working capital), in addition to knowledge of the implications of long-term financing and investment decisions, as well as a clear understanding of the risk and return trade-offs faced by capital providers.
International Business Concentration
The Sprott MBA International Business concentration enables managers to navigate the increasingly complex and turbulent international environment faced by all organizations. In this concentration, you’ll gain the tools necessary to analyze international organizations, international markets and their broader contexts. Experience in international business is an increasingly critical requirement for business managers. With recent shifts in global manufacturing and trade patterns, most businesses – whether big or small – have suppliers, allies and competitors with foreign roots and international aspirations. To compete successfully in foreign markets, you must understand the motivations of your partners, competitors and customers. Not only do you need to consider the positions taken by foreign firms but also the cultural values which guide their perceptions.
Graduates of the International Business concentration will be equipped to:
- Undertake international postings in the United States or overseas.
- Work in international management positions within Canada, such as in exporting departments, in firms with operations abroad.
- Work as consultants or in management positions focusing on such areas as exporting, importing, foreign market development or investment, or international HR management.
- Work as consultants or in management with the numerous NGOs and government departments or agencies that focus on international affairs.
International Development Management
In the current international development environment, the success of development initiatives is often compromised because of inadequate management capabilities and poor leadership skills. The failure to deliver the expected results of development programs or projects is extremely costly in both human and economic terms.
Created in partnership with Carleton University’s renowned Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) and School of Public Policy and Administration (SPPA), the Sprott MBA International Development Management concentration is uniquely designed to combine the appropriate business practices, management capabilities and leadership skills with an in-depth understanding of international development goals and processes. This combination provides graduates with the needed capabilities to plan, organize and deliver international development programs and projects.
Graduates of the MBA International Development Management concentration will be equipped to:
- assume mid-level and senior management roles in international development (depending on experience at program entry).
- facilitate the initiation, financing and growth of sustainable, locally-based enterprises in developing regions.
- support private-sector multinational enterprises in ensuring that they operate in fair and sustainable way.
- lead large international development programs and projects in a variety of development sectors in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations in any region of the world.
- translate development policy objectives into relevant programs and projects, execute them and evaluate their effectiveness and efficiency.
