Slovakia, which is technically the Slovak Republic, is a state in Central Europe bordered by Austria, Czech Republic, Poland, Ukraine and Hungary. The mountainous country is known for the beautiful Carpathian Mountains, which extend across most of its northern portion. The economy is a high-income one and is growing quickly. In fact, Slovakia has one of the fastest economic growth rates in the European Union. It is also unique in that it is the only of the formerly communist states that has since joined the European Union. Its economy is driven largely by the car production industry, and it is the largest car producing country in the world.

Business Studies in Slovakia

Because of its strong economy and high income level, Slovakia is appealing to international students who are looking to study business. Students interested in studying business will attend one of Slovakia's universities, many of which are state owned and operated.

Many students are drawn to the educational opportunities in Slovakia because of the opportunity to study an economy that is emerging from communist control, and doing so quite well. Studying the society, economy and educational system of this country can give great insight into the effects of communism and its aftermath.

Students studying in Slovakia will begin with Stage 1 or Bachelor programs, which last three to four years. Stage 2 Masters programs add an addition 1 to 3 years. A masters in business typically takes two additional years.

International students studying in Slovakia will pay between $2,000 to $8,000 USD per year for tuition, and will also need money to cover living expenses. Those who live in Slovakia will be able to receive their college education at no charge.

Sometimes Slovakian universities have more applicants than they have openings. When this happens, a series of examinations will be used to determine which applicants will be allowed entrance to the program.

The academic calendar in Slovakia runs from August through May. Some students can take summer classes if they want to shorten their length of study.
