Program Description

Part-Time MBA Program

University of Pittsburgh: Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business

Part-Time MBA Program

The Katz Part-Time MBA program is nationally ranked, but won't make you break the bank. The program is designed for working professionals like you and is the least expensive of the nationally ranked programs in the Pittsburgh region.

We prepare you for a business world that is always changing by giving you a background in globalism, collaboration, and innovation. Many of our graduates have gone on to change careers or to attain long-sought-after promotions.

A National Reputation in Your Backyard

Our program is nationally ranked, yet close to home. We provide the same innovative curriculum across our MBA programs with access to Katz faculty members. Our program is centered on experience-based learning exercises that expose you to a variety of real-world business problems. You gain practical knowledge that enables you to build upon the work experience that you've already accumulated. As a Katz MBA, you make an immediate impact because we give you the knowledge and confidence needed to be a strong leader.

MBA to Fit Your Schedule

Assuming you take six credits per term, it generally takes about three years to complete the program. Classes are held year-round, giving you the option of enrolling in fall, spring, and summer sessions. We understand that our students have demanding day jobs. Our classes shouldn't cause you to miss work, as they are scheduled Monday through Thursday from 6:15 to 9 p.m. and occasionally on Saturdays from 9 to 11:45 a.m. Yet we understand when business travel takes you out of town. Katz faculty members are accommodating.

All Backgrounds Welcome

Katz offers the personalized attention of a small school, but is a part of something big: a large research institution situated in a major U.S. city. Diversity is one of our program's greatest strengths. It is not uncommon to have a class composed of certified public accountants, engineers, doctors, attorneys, entrepreneurs, and individuals poised to take over the family business. Our students build interdisciplinary skills by working with people from different backgrounds - and different ways of thinking.

Degree Requirements

Our applicants generally have work experience and strong academic backgrounds. After being admitted into the program, a student must fulfill the following requirements to graduate:

  • The completion of 52.5 credits of course work within four years of the first semester of enrollment
  • A minimum cumulative quality point average (QPA) of 3.0 (the equivalent of a B)

Sample Curricula

Below is a sample program of study for admitted students who have satisfied the calculus requirement and intend to follow a three-year plan. Part-time students typically register for 18 credits per year.

Fourteen-week courses are worth three credits while seven-week courses are worth 1.5 credits. They virtually always meet once per week. So, for example, Fall 1 comprises seven weeks.

Classes are held Monday through Thursday from 6:15 to 9 p.m. as well as occasional Saturdays from 9 to 11:45 a.m.
