Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a sovereign state in Southeast Asia bordered by China, Thailand, India, Laos and Bangladesh. The government has embarked on a series of reforms to direct the country towards liberal democracy, a mixed economy and reconciliation. Since the transition to new government, Burma's human rights record has been improving. The United States, Japan and the European Union countries have begun to reduce or eliminate economic sanctions to allow foreign direct investment which will provide the Burmese government with additional tax revenue.
