Program Description

The MBA Tourism Management is aimed at existing industry professionals seeking to optimise their career potential and provides flexible study and pricing options allowing you to achieve your educational aspirations without compromising work and family commitments.  Designed in consultation with regional and national businesses operating in a range of sectors across the tourism industry this programme gives you the opportunity to develop your operational and strategic knowledge in the management of tourism-related businesses and obtain a highly relevant qualification at postgraduate level.  The MBA also provides you with the opportunity to focus on a particular sector of industry through the provision of specialist modules at Diploma level.

Located at our Ambleside Campus, in the heart of the Lake District, and a UNESCO Heritage site, your learning experience is embedded into one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, providing insights into best practice and the opportunity to work with some of the most innovative and creative businesses in the region. Our strategic partnerships with Cumbria Tourist Board, the Lake District China Forum and the Lake District Hotels Association, alongside our wider national and international industry links, provide you with access to the latest data and information impacting on the tourism industry in the region.

The course consists of three distinct but integrated stages:

  • PG Certificate – The Certificate Stage provides the key knowledge and skills associated with the management of the visitor experience and the need for innovation and the development of a unique offering in today’s competitive environment.
  • PG Diploma – The Diploma Stage discusses the contemporary strategic challenges and issues confronting organisations in the tourism industry and allows you to focus on a key sector of knowledge and expertise in order to enhance your employability.
  • Masters – the final stage of the MBA develops your applied research skills and competencies and includes a capstone project working in consultation with industry to address real-world challenges and problems.

The specialist MBA is a premium management qualification for aspiring industry leaders working in tourism, hospitality and events management around the world.

As a programme of applied learning that is designed to allow you to work and study at the same time, the MBA Tourism Management provides you with flexible learning options that include online study materials and face-to-face-teaching offered in a 3-day block at our stunning Ambleside campus.  All modules are delivered by our team of subject experts, all of whom have industry and academic expertise, providing you with the opportunity to discuss the most up to date challenges and issues confronting businesses operating in this dynamic and fast-moving industry.   

In addition to the core modules that make up the programme, you can also opt to study two modules that focus on a key sector of the industry, allowing you to build your expertise as a manager and develop your creativity, problem-solving, interpersonal and strategic thinking capabilities, ensuring that you can have a positive impact on any company you work for.

If you would like to develop your in-depth knowledge of a sector and develop a particular area of expertise you can choose to study one of four specialist areas of study:

Heritage and Culture – You should register on the following two modules:

Sustainable Tourism – You should register on the following two modules:

  • Sustainable Strategic Collaboration in Tourism
  • Transformational Tourism

Cultural Events – You should register on the following two modules:

  • Events and Rural Regeneration

Hotel Management – You should register on the following two modules:

  • Strategic Hotel Management
  • Sustainable Supply Chain Management

 If you choose one of the above-specialised areas of study this will be reflected in your final award.

Selection criteria

Applicants would be expected to have the following:

1st or 2nd class honours degree or equivalent and at least two years of post-graduation work experience.

An MBA is the primary management qualification for aspiring business leaders and our full-time MBA is designed for those who already have at least two years post-graduation work experience and wish to invest in a programme that will give graduates the skills and knowledge to build on their existing work experience to establish, sustain and progress a successful managerial or professional career to more senior levels.

Applications without standard qualifications must demonstrate:

  • The capacity for theoretical debate;
  • A high level of motivation;
  • The capacity for independent study;
  • The ability to achieve the proposed programme of work;
  • Students for whom English is not their first language must have achieved IELTS 6.5 (with a minimum 6 in each component).
