The MBA Programme

The MBA is offered by the Faculty of Business and Management. It is a broad general management qualification designed to the needs of experienced or aspiring managers who wish to expand their knowledge and skills to equip them for senior management positions.

The MBA is a flexible modular programme which can be tailored to study at a pace which suits individual students.

There are two ways of studying the programme -- a 1 year programme of study for those who wish to study on a full-time basis, or a part-time pathway for those who intend to balance work and study, those who opt for this latter option usually take between 2 or 3 years to complete the MBA, however students may take up to 5 years to complete the course.

Participants will enhance their knowledge in the areas of:

  • Functional management, i.e. production, quality, marketing, finance, human relations, enterprise and information management.
  • General management, i.e. organisation theory, strategy, business improvement, change management and implementation, leadership, innovation and technology transfer.
  • The environmental influences on organisations, i.e. legal, ethical, social, cultural, economic, international and technological (for example the likely impact of e-business).

Participants will enhance their skills in the areas of Communication, Interpersonal aspects of management, team working. In short, the overall aim of this programme is to help managers to develop those general transferable skills which are key to successful senior management.

Teaching, learning and assessment

The MBA places great emphasis on work-based projects, working in teams and in study groups. Thus there will be learning both through individual study and through being part of a group. In addition to examinations and assignments, the assessment will focus on group work projects. Peer learning is also an inherent part of our philosophy; we believe that participants can learn much from each other.

Flexibility

The University of Ulster MBA provides a breadth of subject knowledge through a highly flexible and integrated structure which fully reflects the needs of management in increasingly competitive international and local business environments. Our students learn management theory and practice based on cutting-edge international research.

In addition, because we understand the demands placed on today's managers, we have structured the MBA to minimise the amount of time part-time participants spend away from their organisations and allow the option of taking a break after each of the three years of study.

MBA Programme structure

The MBA programme is made up of a number of credit bearing modules. To complete the full MBA students need to accumulate a minimum of 180 credit points. Students study compulsory modules and elective modules in order to gain credit points during the programme.

All students are required to participate in an induction course. This introduces them to the aims, objectives, content, learning and teaching methods, basic study skills and regulations of the MBA. In addition, various other elements central to good general management practice are covered.
