The Telfer MBA is your program. We designed the Telfer MBA to give you the skills, knowledge and learning experiences you need to prepare for a meaningful, rewarding career. Our program also offers you the flexibility to pursue specific subjects and courses that matter most to you. Whatever your passions and goals, we are by your side to do whatever we can to help you reach them.

Driven to meet your needs and schedule

You can take our program over one or two years.

  • Intensive (one year): You will follow a rigorous schedule in which classes and scheduled program activities are held mostly during the day on weekdays.
  • Professional (two years): Taking our program over two years enables you to stay on the job. You will attend classes every Tuesday night, all day every other Saturday and occasionally on Sundays.

Content that enables you to deliver results

We have designed and organized our program according to the four essential competencies of high-performing managers in business today: strategize, work with data, work with people and deliver results. The courses that build these competencies are delivered in six distinctive course blocks.

You can customize your course load to reflect your preferred career path. Choose from a variety of elective courses organized by theme, such as finance, entrepreneurship and innovation, management consulting, and business analytics. You are free to choose courses from all four categories or to concentrate on a specific area.

Our program takes a competency-based approach to teaching that puts you in the centre of the best possible environment in which to learn. Our professors teach proven concepts about management. Team learning enables you to learn from your peers, many of whom come from countries around the world. Our overall cohort and individual class sizes are small so that our program itself and every course within it provide meaningful opportunities for you to engage thoughtfully with your professors and peers.

Our professors are seasoned teachers and expert researchers. They conduct their research through a variety of research units and strategic research clusters centred on business analytics and performance, finance and accounting, entrepreneurship and innovation, and health transformation.

Through their research, our professors uncover relevant insights into the major challenges facing today’s leaders and managers. These insights enable them to navigate through current problems and to anticipate and devise solutions to tomorrow’s challenges, particularly in strategic areas such as business analytics and performance, and innovation and entrepreneurship.

Our program takes a competency-based approach to teaching that puts you in the centre of the best possible learning environment.

Balance theoretical and practical

Our professors teach well-researched concepts about management that deliver proven results. When you grasp these ideas, you can critically assess current and emerging issues in either public or private organizations and implement strategies to ensure success.

We also use team learning. By collaborating closely with your peers—many with knowledge of business cultures that differ from yours—you gain an even deeper understanding of vital management concepts and practices and how they are applied in organizations today.

Be part of small, engaging classes

Fifty students—that is the maximum number of students in each cohort of our program. We keep our overall cohort and individual class sizes small so that our program itself and every course within it are engaging, providing meaningful opportunities for you to participate thoughtfully with your professors and peers.

A hybrid approach that integrates digital mobile technologies

We take full advantage of the latest digital mobile technologies to supplement and enhance what goes on in our classes. Join 250 MBAs from across Canada at the MBA Games

Be part of Team Telfer at the MBA Games. The annual competition pits teams made up of MBA students from 25 business schools across Canada against each other in a series of events that challenge their academic acumen, athletic prowess and team spirit.

MBA case competitions

Take part in one or many case competitions. These challenging events give you a chance to put your skills and knowledge to the test against students from other business schools, while gaining valuable feedback from industry leaders who act as judges.

Telfer MBA conferences

Learn from special guests who share their wisdom and fresh insights on practical business matters, such as leadership, entrepreneurship, performance management and business analytics.

Admission Criteria

  • A Canadian baccalaureate degree, or equivalent, with a minimum grade of B or 70 percent. All post-secondary studies are considered at the time of admission, with the most recent being considered first.
  • A minimum of three years of full-time managerial or professional work experience. Part‑time and summer jobs and co‑op placements do not count toward this experience but are considered favourably during the file evaluation.
  • A competitive score in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Last year's average GMAT was 612.
  • English proficiency.

Exceptionally, a limited number of candidates may be considered for admission on the basis of substantial managerial or professional training and experience (at least 10 years), provided there is strong evidence of management responsibilities and career progression, even if such candidates do not hold a university degree or do not meet the minimum academic requirements.

Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis. We strongly advise candidates to apply as early as possible to increase their chances of being considered for a scholarship.

  • International: February 1

Admission Tests

You must achieve a competitive score in the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

  • GMAT Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT): a minimum overall score of the 50th percentile with a minimum of the 45th percentile in verbal and quantitative. Last year's average score was 612 and the range 570-780.
  • GRE Graduate Record Examinations® (GRE®): a minimum overall score of 310 with at least the 45th percentile in verbal and 40th in quantitative.

N.B. The GMAT or the GRE® is mandatory and this admission requirement will not be waived.

Language Proficiency

Candidates whose mother tongue is neither English nor French are required to provide evidence of proficiency in one of these languages. Candidates applying to the English MBA must submit ONE of the following to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies to confirm their English proficiency (the language test scores cannot be more than two years old as the date of application of potential entry into the MBA program):

  • Proof of completion within the last five years, of a previous degree program in an English language university.
  • Proof of recent prolonged residence and exercise of a profession in an English speaking country (normally at least four years over the last six years).
  • A score of at least 100 (Internet-based) or 250 (computer-based) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  • A score of at least 7 in at least three of the four Academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) tests (Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking) and at least 6 in the fourth. The General Training IELTS test is not accepted.
  • A score of at least 14 on the CANTEST, administered by the University of Ottawa, with no individual test score below 4.0, along with a score of 4.5 on the oral component of the test.
  • A score of at least 68 on the Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE Academic).
