Who is this programme for?
Newcastle Business School’s MBA conversion is specifically designed for students wishing to top up their existing masters programme to the Newcastle Business School MBA. Individuals who have (or seek to have) a relevant Masters degree from Newcastle Business School and have subsequently complimented this with three years minimum work experience are able to apply.
First, you study on campus for your Masters degree. Next, you gain relevant work experience. Then you apply for the entry to the MBA conversion. It’s as easy as that.
From 2008, we offered the MBA conversion to students from our ‘MSc Business with suite’ of programmes and our MA IBA (now MSc Global Business Management).
From 2010 it is planned to offer an MBA Conversion Programme to all of our Masters programmes*.
Stage 1 - Study the relevant Masters programme
For those students wishing to undertake this route you must first successfully complete any of the Masters programmes in this brochure, with the exception of the MA MSc Multi-Disciplinary Design Innovation. There are two routes to convert your programme to an MBA. The first is for those students who have completed a Generalist Masters, that is the MSc Business with Management or the MSc Global Business Management (and its
predecessor MAIBA). The second is for those who have completed any of the specialist MSc programmes.
Stage 2 - Relevant work experience
At Newcastle Business School, the emphasis has always been about putting business theory into practice. As a result all our programmes are designed to make the transition from study to the real world as seamless as possible. Previous Masters graduates have gone on to work in the pharmaceutical, banking and retail industries as well as management positions all over the world, in both the public and private sectors. For our MBA programme there is a requirement that students should have achieved exposure to a
range of management and supervisory activity, normally a minimum of 3 years from completion of the taught programme.
Stage 3 - The MBA conversion programme - online study
Once you have completed stages 1 and 2 you can apply for the MBA conversion. Entry to the MBA is simple and flexible. As soon as you feel ready, just let us know.
If you originally studied the MSc Business with Management programme or the MSc Global Business Management (MAIBA), the MBA conversion comprises a 60 credit Continuous Professional Development (CPD) portfolio based on your managerial experiences since graduation and provides linkage between the academic theory developed on your Masters and your current practitioner experience. This must be submitted within one calendar year of enrolment on the programme. The CPD portfolio can be completed with no need to attend campus lectures or seminars, but we would encourage you to visit us at some point in your study period. Because your supervisor is online you can study anywhere, at anytime and at your own pace. So it fits perfectly around your work and leisure commitments. All guidance material for the portfolio is provided.
If you originally studied one of the specialist Masters degrees then the process of completing an MBA is the same as above but has one additional element. As well as the distance learning Conversion programme, students will undergo a mapping exercise to determine if, and which, additional modules from the MBA will need to be completed. It is not possible to be precise about this as it will depend on a combination of original study and subsequent experience.
*at the time of publication the MBA top-up from the specialist Masters programmes is still subject to university approval.
