Boost your performance as a leader and a manager with a broad-based business programme you can study while you work.
Step up into a position in senior management with an executive qualification that strengthens your analytical rigour and strategic acumen. The Executive Master of Business Administration (Executive MBA) is an intensive degree, structured at three courses per trimester.
Take your career to the next level
An Executive MBA sends a message to your professional peers and future employers—about your intellectual ability, professional experience, executive calibre, and understanding of innovation in business.
Learn from academic and professional leaders and build powerful networks with your fellow students. You'll master tools and models that improve strategic thinking, decision making, and leadership.
Develop practical skills that you can immediately put to use in your professional life, and build a bank of knowledge that will maximise your career potential.
You’ll apply your learning in a live consultancy project—working overseas with international business, or here with a New Zealand organisation.
Our business administration programme is accredited to the British-based Association of MBAs (AMBA), an internationally recognised global standard for all MBA programmes.
Wellington School of Business and Government is among a small group of business schools worldwide that hold the 'Triple Crown' of international business education accreditations. You can be confident your qualification will stand up against the best around the world.
Study while you work
Study part-time while working. Courses are held every other week on Friday and Saturday, and you'll be able to apply what you're learning to your professional life right away.
Qualification family structure
The Executive MBA has a tiered family of qualifications. These are staircased so that courses completed for each qualification can count towards the next step.
A Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration can lead to an Executive MBA.
Choose the qualification with the entry requirements, time commitment and career benefits that fits you best.
What you'll study
The 180-point Executive MBA can be completed in one year of full-time study (four trimesters) or up to four years of part-time study.
Part 1 In Part 1 you’ll complete eight core courses, giving you a solid grounding in key business opportunities and issues. These include organisational theory topics like structure, culture and change, economic analysis for business decisions, corporate financial management, strategic marketing, and digital transformation.
You’ll also have the chance to travel internationally, putting your new skills to good use as a consultant to an overseas organisation.
Part 2 In Part 2 you’ll choose an elective from courses that cover topics including innovation and entrepreneurship, negotiation and dispute resolution, and strategic management.
Or choose to focus on the field most relevant to you, with selected courses from the University’s business school.
You'll kick off your study with a detailed programme orientation.
You'll also have opportunities to attend events, workshops, social functions, and seminars. The Postgraduate Students' Association can give you information and provides a voice for you on campus.
Returning to study
Many students pick up postgraduate study after several years away, or they haven't studied at a tertiary level before. If it's been a while since you've studied, our liaison officers can help you get into university life.
Set your sights on roles like a chief executive, chief operating officer, chief financial officer, chief marketing officer, chief information officer, and general manager.
Many Victoria University of Wellington business administration graduates are now C-suite business and public sector executives, both in New Zealand and overseas.
The performance lift and opportunities for promotion that the MBA qualifications offer can significantly increase your earning power.
