Shanghai University of Finance & Economics - College of Business

The business education history of Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE) can be traced back to 1917 when a commerce program was established at the Nanjing Higher Normal School. YANG Xingfo, the well-known social activist and patriotic democratic personage, was the program director. In 1921, the program was transferred east to Shanghai and became the Shanghai University of Commerce. This university was the first commerce university in China’s education history. GUO Bingwen, the renowned educator, was the first chancellor. MA Yinchu, the famous economist, became the first director of academic affairs.

As China's first higher education institution of business studies, SUFE suggested since it was established "to train and develop those talents who have guidance and organizational capabilities and can take the lead in industry and commerce." Adhering to this tradition and spirit, SUFE’s several generations of excellent educators have been committing themselves to business research, exploring the truth and contributing to the society with their research and education achievements by forming a close partnership with the society.

After several generations of business educators’ unremitting efforts, SUFE has become a multi-disciplinary university which focuses on applied economics and management science and maintains a coordinated development of finance, economics, management, law and science. In 1981, SUFE became the first financial university awarded the right to grant doctoral degrees. In 1992, SUFE was among the first schools to establish mobile stations. In 1996, SUFE joined the “211 Project,” a program to build 100 key universities. In 2000 and 2007, SUFE got “outstanding” undergraduate teaching appraise from the Ministry of Education. The university enrolled in the national high-level university programs (985 project) in 2007.

The university currently has 3 national key disciplines - accounting, finance and history of economic thought, 1 national key nurturing discipline – finance, 4 key disciplines of Ministry of Finance and 6 Shanghai key disciplines. The university houses 3 national bases which are the training base of national economics talents, the national cultural quality education base for college students, and the key research base of humanities and social sciences of the Ministry of Education - the Institute of Accounting and Finance. SUFE now has 4 doctoral degree programs of first-level disciplines which are theoretical economics, applied economics, business administration, and management science & engineering, 3 mobile stations for post-doctoral research on theoretical economics, applied economics and business administration respectively , 44 doctoral degree programs of second-level disciplines, 6 master degree programs of first-level disciplines, 74 master degree programs of second-level disciplines, and 36 undergraduate programs.

According to the university’s development orientation of "being a multi-disciplinary research university with distinguishing financial features", the overall goal of “building a first-class socialist university under the modernized, internationalized and informationized development framework”, the open-door concept, and the international business education trends, SUFE resumed college of business in early 2011 to integrate the disciplines’ strength and advantages, build the flagship project of business education, improve the business education’s content and quality, and commit to high-level and innovative business leaders’ cultivation for China and the world.
